IT training isn’t just for IT professionals – or even for developers, data analysts or security professionals. Not at all. Many non-technical customer-facing professionals can greatly benefit from basic cloud or networking training, especially for sales professionals in tech industries.
“Selling high-tech solutions” covers many areas, but it can be broadly divided into two areas.
Selling for a Value Added Reseller (VAR), solution provider, or systems integrator–companies that sell and implement solutions, based on specific manufacturer products, or
Professional consulting services that are vendor-neutral or span multiple technologies can be sold.
When you are asking a sales rep which certifications are relevant, make sure you look at the technologies and products that underpin what they sell.
Let’s take a look below at the top IT certifications for sales teams. It is safe to say that the best certifications are those that are available where there is money. This is to say that they will be working in the most current technology. We will be looking at cloud-based solutions that are based on private or public cloud technology, networking solutions and cyber-security services.

CompTIA A+ certification and training is a great way to get started if you are new to technology. This is a well-known certification. To learn about the most common software and hardware technologies, you will only need basic computer and internet skills.
As a great way to learn more complex and advanced IT technologies, you can start with our CompTIA 220-901 or CompTIA 220-902 courses.
MCSA (Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate).
It’s likely that the IT solution you are selling is running on Microsoft Server and Windows if it’s located in a customer’s data center.
If you have the CompTIA A+ certification, you might consider the training for Microsoft’s entry level MCSA certifications — MCSA Windows 10 or the more traditional MCSA Windows Server 2012.
MCSA: Windows 10
Microsoft Windows 10 70-697: Configuring Windows Devices
Microsoft Windows 10 70-698: Configuring and Installing Windows 10
MCSA: Windows Server 2012
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 70-441 with R2 updates
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 70-411R2
CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCENT/CCNA
CompTIA’s Network+ vendor neutral certification is a good option if you are selling into or selling into networked environments. If your prospects and customers are keen on Cisco networking, you might consider Cisco’s entry level CCENT. Then, perhaps, you can move to the Cisco Certified Network Associate Routing and Switching certification.
These certifications can be obtained by taking SPOTO courses:
CompTIA Network+ CompTIA Network+ N10-006
Cisco CCENT: Cisco CCENT/CCNA ICND1 100-105,
Cisco CCNA Routing & Switching: Cisco CCENT course above followed Cisco CCNA ICND2 200–105.
CompTIA Cloud Essentials (or Amazon Services (AWS), as well as CompTIA Cloud Essentials (or both)
A cloud services certification is a smart decision if you are selling in a cloud environment. Synergy Research recently found that Amazon Web Services is the most popular public cloud service provider with three times more than Microsoft Azure, the closest competitor. You can choose to get an AWS certification, or the vendor-neutral CompTIA Cloud Essentials.
Start with AWS: Technical Essentials, then move on to AWS Certified SysOps Administrator Associate.
Security is our final certification area. We vote for the CompTIA Security+ certification, which is vendor-neutral in this complex area. It covers all aspects of network security, compliance, and operation security. It covers:
